BA101: Broken as Things Aren’t

by Lisa Dale on May 7, 2009

I just finished Martha Witt’s Broken As Things Are, about a an adolescent girl living in a dysfunctional family. Her brother Ginx is autistic–brilliant, crushingly perfect-looking, and fascinating. Moran-Lee, his sister, understands him in a way no one else can, so that at times she shares some of his traits. The only trouble is that even as they’ve bonded with each other in order to cope with their off-kilter family life, their relationship becomes…well…inappropriate. There’s nothing physical between them–at least, in a court of law their relationship wouldn’t be physically incestuous. But it’s love, and it’s icky. The book’s plot moves along as Morgan-Lee learns to break free of the unhealthy yet intense relationship she has with her brother.
