New Book Cover Contest

by Lisa Dale on May 18, 2009

Hi All!

I’m having a contest to celebrate the COVER ART for my new book. As many of you know IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT comes out in November of this year. Here’s what it’s about:

(Grand Central, November 09) Lana Biel longs to leave her family’s Vermont wildflower farm so she can travel and see the world. And her sister Karin wants nothing more than to put down roots and conceive the child she and her husband just can’t seem to have. When a lighthearted fling with a mountain biker leaves Lana expecting, she finds herself tumbling headlong into motherhood while her sister Karin can only look on.

For help, Lana turns to Eli Ward, a professional meteorite hunter and her best friend for the last ten years. But Eli’s keeping secrets that could turn their friendship on its head. As the Vermont seasons change and the flowers in the wildflower meadows begin to fade, Lana must make some meaningful decisions about her family, her friendships, her love life, and her dreams.

To celebrate, I decided to have a little contest. I’ll include a picture of the new book cover below, and all you have to do is write a caption for the scene on the cover. It can be juvenile, heartfelt, silly, nice–whatever. Or, if you can’t think of a caption, just leave any comment about the cover. Let me know what you think.

Scroll down to see my new cover! Post your caption or your thoughts as a comment on this blog post!

One person will get to pick a prize from the Love To Readers section of my blog.

Leave your comments: I’d love to know what you think!

It is very pretty but I’m not sure if we are to think that the pic is the mountain biker, or Eli? Either way, I’m looking forward to reading the book, having enjoyed “Simple Wishes” a very great deal. Congratulations on your success so early in life, and your courage to follow your dream, which you seem to have done, is admirable.

Thanks, EJB. That is so sweet. I may be young-ish, but believe me, I’ve put in my time and then some, LOL! As for Eli or the mountain biker…well, it’s a good question, and a mystery until you read the book. :-) Glad you liked Simple Wishes. That makes me happy.

First comes love – Then comes Bridezilla!!!!

16 Cherie Michalec 05.19.09 at 6:54 pm

First comes love…then a ‘Love Story’! (The cover reminds me of Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neal)

17 Lois 05.19.09 at 6:57 pm

Well, alas, I have no caption, but I definitely love this cover. This is a cover, that, especially in the last three months of the year, I would pick up and check out — it’s obviously a book that takes place in the winter, a little bit of Christmas decoration is there for the holiday angle, and it’s a romance with the happy guy and gal. It’s the type of cover that if I’m browsing during that part of the year, I’m definitely going to jump to learn more. Besides, it’s just so pretty. :)

Lois

18 Steve 05.19.09 at 7:03 pm

Regarding a caption, I looked closely at the pic of the 2 people in the snow, on the cover. The only possible caption is:

“He still loves me, even though I have no head.”

19 Amanda Morelli 05.19.09 at 7:08 pm

first comes love… then comes a mix up.

20 Joanne Morelli 05.19.09 at 7:14 pm

First comes love…Then comes Forever.

30 Patricia Barraclough 05.19.09 at 10:40 pm

The cover is lovely. Used to live in upstate NY and really miss winter days like that.
First comes love… then the rest of your life. Throw the book title in and a lot more possibilities are there.

Your book sounds like another winner! I really enjoyed your first one, SIMPLE WISHES!

I would caption the cover,

“Sentimental and charming with a pleasing love story at its heart!”

Many congratulations on your new book! How exciting!

34 Susan Lathen 05.20.09 at 12:44 am

“First comes love” then comes … marrage? congratulations? or Good-Bye? Should Lana
travel with Eli searching for meteorites with his new assignment and making her sister
Karin’s dreams come true or…

39 Richard Suchoski 05.20.09 at 8:31 am

Instead of “First comes love ….”, maybe “Cold hands, warm hearts”. “Love, like snow, can become unpredictably deep”? Worded another way, “Love is like snow, you never know when it will happen or how strong it will be”? Given the context of the book, “What you would love to do versus what you do to those you love ….”? Or, to be silly, “In winter, not only are the trees are deflowered”. =)

40 tamar 05.20.09 at 9:00 am

a.] Steve is for sure my winner. Every lover has some peccadillo the other lover must learn to accept, after all…. Headlessness could just be Lana’s.

b.] Lisa: rock the heck on. :) t.s.s.

41 Kelli Jo 05.20.09 at 9:15 am

…while walking in a Winter Wonderland!

42 LORRAINE M. LAROSE 05.20.09 at 11:18 am

Hi Lisa,

What a beautiful book jacket! Definitely would get my attention.

Caption: Ah, The Good Life!

43 Sven 05.20.09 at 11:22 am

Pat: The categories are Notable Fonts and Before And After.
Sven: Pat, I’d like to solve the puzzle: It Happened One Nightmare Before Christmas

44 Margaret 05.20.09 at 1:22 pm

Unless this book is about Christmas you have to get rid of the wreath.

45 Lisa Dale 05.20.09 at 2:42 pm

Thanks for your comments and care everyone! Funny, interesting stuff.

I’m leaving on Friday for Florida so I plan to pick a winner before then.

First comes love, then comes trouble wrapped with curiosity and self-exploration.

(probably corny, but i wanted you to get 50 comments!)

51 Sera 05.21.09 at 6:28 am

Lisa,

can’t think of a catchy title. maybe

…then what?

good luck!

52 Robert Guadagno 05.21.09 at 6:41 am

Lisa, I could not think of anything (creative mind-freeze) for the caption contest; but I wanted to wish you the best with the second book (and continued success on the first)!

I will say that the sinopsis of “It happend One Night” makes me want to take up mountain biking in Vermont (unless the guy turns into a jerk somewhere in the book – then I’ll skip the whole thing). :)

53 elizabeth 05.21.09 at 6:47 am

First comes love…
…everything else takes second place.

It’s a lovely cover, Lisa. It captures that rapturous moment that none of us wish to escape from. That moment when we know that putting our feet back on the ground gives reality too much power.

54 Debby Buchanan 05.21.09 at 7:35 am

First Comes Love
Skip the marriage
Better get ready
for a baby carriage

55 Cathy Arnatt 05.21.09 at 8:03 am

Hi Lisa! I love the cover it is so cute and lovely!
I guess when I first saw it I thought:
“First comes love…to melt the winter ice”
“First comes love to bring warmth on a cold day”
“First comes love to…knock you up and leave you in the snow??”

The title “It Happened One Night” made me think of the old movie with Clark Gable and then that makes me think of all the random movies I’ve watched and lots of random quotes: “It could happen to you ,” “Here’s looking at you kid,” “Along comes Baby,” “No one puts Baby in the corner,” “Cry Baby,” “Bringing up Baby” Ok I am done with all these Babies!

I like this, it’s fun!

56 Anita 05.21.09 at 10:21 am

Hi, New cover looks nice, but I might expect it to show a “spring” season instead of snow.

Here are a couple of quotes that might be appropriate as captions – found on internet when looking for something else (no author was listed for these):
“Love is like wildflowers; It’s often found in the most unlikely places.”

“We will be known by the tracks we leave behind.” (Dakota proverb)

Good luck – hope it is a best seller for a long time!!

First comes love… then the black ice, eight hours in the O.R., and six months of physical therapy. But that’s only the begining: you’re out of work, no health insurance, the fall killed your boyfriend, he left you with a bun in the oven, and now you’re hooked on painkillers and looking to score…but you can’t drive because you’re still in a wheel chair. In a word, you’re fucked–okay that’s two with a contraction. A new novel by Lisa Dale.

Let me know if you need any more help with this project. I’ve never written one of these things, but I think I’m pretty good at it.
Jamie

61 Lisa Dale 05.21.09 at 7:53 pm

Jamie, that’s the perfect comment to end this little contest with. I’m about to go post the winner.

Thanks to everyone for dropping in!

62 Chicken Vindaloo Warrior 05.22.09 at 8:09 am

A little yellow snow would add to the realism.

63 Anisah 09.05.09 at 2:58 pm

Yes, Yes, Yes, I will. By the way, I like the cover.
